Employee HR queries were draining our time. We weren’t alone.
The average HR professional spends 10 hours per week answering employee HR queries.
Gemma (the real one) and Charlie used to spend a lot of time answering employee or line manager’s HR-related questions when working together at a large UK retailer.
We found that a lot of HR information our teams needed was hidden away in paragraph 2, subsection 6 of the employee handbook or question number 3000 of the FAQs.
The problem is, answers to HR-related queries are important to the employees but this isn’t where the real HR work is done.
Getting back to the work that matters
We wanted to find a balance between giving people the answers they need whilst freeing HR up to work on the most complex cases and strategic initiatives, where HR teams add the most value.
We set about recreating the experience of asking Gemma without having to…well…ask Gemma.
AskGemma was born.
We created an AI HR digital assistant that acts as the first port of call for employee HR queries and allows HR professionals to reclaim precious time.
AskGemma isn’t about removing employee to HR human interactions, rather it facilitates meaningful employee/HR conversations. By allowing employees to self-serve answers to the most common HR-related queries, HR have more time to support the most complex cases and driving strategic change.
We found that AskGemma was collecting lots of useful information about employee sentiment, insight into important topics whilst being able to anonymise it so we built a dashboard to be able to surface this strategic insight to HR teams whilst protecting employee privacy.
AskGemma doesn’t replace HR teams, she augments with them to elevate your organisation’s HR function.

Charlie started her career in technology consulting before moving to a leadership position in a large UK retailer where she met Gemma.
